This past week schools across Canada participated in the 40th annual Terry Fox Marathon of Hope. As some of the youngest children in the school, we were very excited this year to be able to join in and participate. Normally, our students walk along the road by our school (we are located in a very busy area of town) to raise awareness for cancer research as well as fulfilling their pledge to those who have helped to support and raise money for cancer research.
This year however, things were done very differently. With it being the 40th anniversary we were challenged to complete physically active tasks that involve the number 40. Some classes ran/walked through an obstacle course for 40 minutes, others played soccer for 40 minutes. Really, the events were all over the place. My students chose to complete a scavenger hunt that contained 40 riddles that they needed to find the answer to. While we were limited with space (and it became hard to find the things we were searching for sometimes) it was a blast trying to see which team would collect the most in the 40 minute time frame that we had.
Spending time with friends and family has become something that we have clung on to in my household, and there are family members who have been diagnosed with one form of cancer or another. As I polled my students, about half of them knew someone who has or has had cancer. Really this is a fact of life that touches so many.
I decided to share with you a scavenger hunt for you to complete as a family. This probably won’t take you 40 minutes, but I still hope that it encourages some great family time together. What I suggest is getting bundled up and going out for a walk somewhere in your neighbourhood or town, and try to find as many items on the list as you can. Some ask to be collected (we chose to take pictures of things rather than collect them), while others ask to be recorded. As you are walking together, hunting for the different items around, I challenge you to think of the people in your life who are the most important to you, think of those who are dealing with the hard realities of cancer in their lives, and maybe see if there’s something that you can do to help (even if it’s just bringing a meal to someone to let them know that you are thinking about them).
